Call for a let after broken strings

I watched a match recently and a situation occurred, which caused debate, here it is maybe someone could comment.

In a ralley player A took a good clean winning shot which won the ralley but in the process of the shot broke a string, Player B was unable to return the shot as it was too good he was not even close to it. After the rally Player A, then took his spare racket (which was on court next to the tin) and took his position to serve.

Player B called for a let, arguing that damaged equipment in a ralley is a let situation, the ref denied the let and play eventually continued but not before an exchange of words.

Is this a let situation?

  • Jonah Barrington says:

The rules state that a player may not continue with broken equipment / racket / strings
Therefore by definition – as with a broken ball during a rally
    The point should be replayed

  • Unless i got it wrong (which I don’t think I did) at the recent markers course it was explained: the marker can call “stop” if the marker considers it dangerous to continue with the rally and request the player to change his/her racket and award the point to the other player because the racket failure is the players fault, same goes for shoe laces, item of clothing etc falling from player (i.e. hair grip, sweat band).
